Learnings from My One-Year-Old Guru

A teacher, guide, master or expert. One who helps in the spiritual evolution of students helps to mould values, one who dispels the darkness and provides direction.

Keeping it simple, here I refer Guru to anyone who has or is guiding me in the journey of life and helping me become a better version. We all are students and on a continuous learning journey called life. Good and bad experiences, people we meet in the process, all leaves some lessons. I was amazed to realize how much an infant had to teach me. One who has entered the world, cannot speak to express himself, is learning the basics himself, had so much to teach.

Lockdown presented me the chance to stay with my baby 24x7 and see the cycle of life from the very beginning. Sharing a few of the learnings by my baby. These are known to all of us, but as we grow we tend to forget them in the mad rush of targets and goals. Hence, a constant reminder is necessary.

  1. Never give up- Babies are so positive. They keep on trying till they get what they want. The commitment to do what they want is inspiring. When they start crawling, standing, walking, they fall several times, get bruised, but they don’t give up till they master the acts. Something we all should learn.
  2. Celebrate each day-As adults, we celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and professional achievements. That too varies from person to person. But kids! They get up excited every morning. Everyday is a day full of excitement and opportunities for them. Likewise, I have started following his trend. To get up everyday with a smile and be thankful to God for life and live every day like there's no tomorrow.  (Something all of us know, but do not really practice)
  3. Focus on Little Things- As parents, we are thrilled to see our kids achieve milestones- turning, smiling, crawling, standing, walking. All kids do that, eventually, so why be so happy? I think all parents can feel it. However, as we flourish, we tend to take such little things for granted. We keep on chasing BIG projects, targets, commission, salary packages. And in this process, we ignore the little things in our life. The little things are precious. Never ignore them. Talking to your grandparents, cycling with friends, cooking with your parents, pranks with siblings, all are the moments to live for.
  4. A Smile can cure everything- A baby’s smile can cure everything. I am sure everyone will agree. And a smile is contagious. So, don’t frown, good or bad, the time is going to change. Cherish the good one and keep smiling. In tough situations, keep smiling, it will be easier to overcome.

In short, stay excited, be happy with what you have and keep smiling. This lockdown people have struggled to survive. If you had a constant supply of food, shelter to stay safe and good health, consider yourself extremely lucky. Keep exploring new options, just like babies do. If one is not working, move to other. Do not stop, keep taking baby steps. These are my learnings from my 1-year old. And whenever I feel low, I see his videos. Seeing babies is therapeutic. Whenever you are low, the day is dull, see a baby smiling, I am sure you will also smile back. Let us be babies again, let us follow the learnings and simplify our lives. Let us welcome 2022 with new hopes and light.
