Making Sure Your data Is Secure When Working From Home

Now that more people are starting to work from home, we must begin to look at how to keep that working environment safe and secure. While working from home offers some flexibility, it also means you may be faced with different challenges compared to the office environment. This is especially true when it comes to security. Without the right security measures, you are more vulnerable to cyberattacks, data breaches, and more.

We’re going to have a look at some of the tips you need to follow in order to keep your home office a safe and secure working environment and what to do when you come across them.

Secure Your Interent Connection

Your home internet connection is what you will use to complete all of your work activities. Therefore, you must make sure it is secure. You can start by using a strong password for your WiFi network to help prevent unauthorized access. If your WiFi is unsecured, then hackers will easily steal your data.

If your router still uses the default log in, then it is time to change this and make it more secure. Use a complex password that includes a mix of numbers, letters, and special characters.

One of the most important steps you need to take when working from home is using a VPN (Virtual Private Network). Even if you head out to a cafe to do some work, a VPN can help keep your computer secure. If you are accessing company servers or sensitive information, then you should always make sure you are using a VPN.

Use Strong And Unique Passwords

Password security is vital when it comes to working from home. You need to make sure you are using unique and strong passwords. This may seem simple, but it’s one of the easiest ways to secure your data. Don’t use easy-to-guess passwords like your name or date of birth or number patterns like 12345. Think about using a password folder that can keep all your passwords in one place. This way, you don’t need to remember them all, and you will prevent yourself from using weak, duplicate passwords. If you are struggling to think of a password, try using two random words put together with a few numbers and a special character.

Be Wary Of Phishing Scams

This is a sophisticated method of scamming that has become more used in recent years. In fact, it’s one of the biggest threats to remote workers. You will usually be faced with a link that appears to be legitimate but tries to get you to click on it or download harmful software.

You need to be extremely cautious when it comes to phishing scams. If you receive an email from a website warning you ‘your connection to this site is not secure,’ don’t click on any links until you have verified the sender and its authenticity.

Set Up A Dedicated Workspace

You need to have a dedicated workspace when you are working from home because it will give you a place where you can stay away from distractions and increase productivity. Keep your work devices separate from your personal ones so you don’t risk mixing up sensitive data. Ensure you keep any work-related files in a cabinet or lock drawer so they are safe. Any digital files should be backed up and encrypted. Try not to share work computers and devices with family members, as this will prevent any risk to sensitive information.

Keep Software And Devices Updated

One of the easiest ways that hackers gain access to your system is by using the fact you are using outdated software. When regularly updating your computer's operating system, antivirus software, apps, and router it will usually include security patches that protect against any new vulnerabilities. It’s a good idea to set your updates to be completed automatically; this way, you can ensure that you are protected with the latest security features and patches. This applies to both a personal computer and a work computer. When you keep it updated, it will help minimize any data breaches.

Conclusion

While working from home provides you with many benefits, it also means you need to pay close attention to security. By securing your internet connection, using strong passwords, watching out for phishing scams, and working in a dedicated workspace, you can minimize the risk of having your data stolen when working from home. Protecting your online workspace is an essential part of keeping yourself productive and secure when working from home.
