I am Paulami Saha from Delhi, I have completed my accessory design from Nift Hyderabad and then dabbled in many multi design disciplinary firms to finally work in a hard goods company where they produced everything in-house. While my head was set out to work in industrial design, my heart loved the idea of conceptualizing while getting the hands dirty. Hence, this idea emerged with the ethos of using Indian handicrafts but with the neatness and finish inspired by the industrial design sector. And I named it ‘PAULAMI’.
PAULAMI is my eponymous label, that believes in celebrating the handmade through a contemporary approach. I design distinctive accessories such as neckpieces, earrings, bags and brooches, mainly with textiles, sprinkled with other Indian handicrafts that pique our interest from time to time. I love to explore techniques, mediums to bring about finely crafted designs with textiles.
At PAULAMI we teach and employ women from marginalised sections, who are given the facility to work for us through their homes. We are trying to find out talent and motivation from these crevices of life and they in turn support us by delivering their trust on us.
As a designer, I love surprise elements and offering more than what you just see. I do prefer clean and minimal design. Even after understanding that the purpose of jewellery is mere beautification, I always question how can I can offer more value. Hence you would find certain quirks, flexibility or dynamism in my pieces. They could be made long, short, adjusted in a variety of ways. I want to give the wearer an opportunity to interact and make the piece their own. I get inspiration from random things, but what I always aim to achieve is “versatility” in my designs. The biggest compliment for me is when the same folks keep coming back to us for more which speaks about our quality and shows their love.
