Hi, I’m Rachael Fernandez Chatterjee and I’m the founder of a Facebook community HelpChecker-Helping Tree! As the name suggests, the community is all about helping employers find and hire the right domestic help and providing employment for domestic help looking for work primarily in Mumbai, India.
Helpchecker was born in 2016, 2 years after I had my first born ! Prior to this I used to design clothes & had my own label called Mulberry Tree, I was taking a short break- maternity leave if you will, and planned to get back 6 months after the baby was born. 6 months became 2 years because of the constant ups and downs I faced with domestic help, and living in a nuclear family I had no other support system to rely on. One day, after feeling like I was in this boat all alone, I realised every other person- married or single, old or young were all in the same boat- a problem all over our city, and even country and one thing lead to another and HelpChecker- Helping Tree was created ! A support system like no other, in a city where good domestic help is everyone’s most prized possession !
The domestic help sector in India is the largest but most unorganised sector in the country. Trying to bring some sort of order to this sector is something I’ve strived to do, there have been many road blocks and it seems like a never ending process but I look forward to the day when it can be accomplished for not only our benefit but for all the domestic help, who make our lives so much better but often don’t get enough credit for it, monetarily or any other way!
