Republic Day: Marking India’s Democratic Rule

What is Republic Day?

A 'Republic' is any state in which the supreme power is in the hands of its people and the representatives they elect along with an elected/nominated president instead of a monarch. As such, Republic Day is celebrated in India on January 26, the date on which The Constitution of India became effective in the year 1950.

Although we celebrated Independence Day on August 15, 1947, the adoption of the Constitution on November 26, 1949, and coming into full effect on January 26 January 1950, marked this day of pride. Thus, India celebrates two National markers of becoming a sovereign republic.

Why do we celebrate Republic Day?

Republic day is the beginning of a democratic India. Its crucial agenda was to empower Indian citizens with its governing principle- of the people, for the people, and by the people. Thus, while Independence Day is the day India became free of British rule, Republic day is the day that the people of India were given their rights as upstanding and capable citizens. All across India, Republic day is celebrated enthusiastically and with aplomb. It marks the beginning of an era where India brought back its glory and became the country is today.

The emergence of the Republic of India

The Constitution of India containing 395 articles and 12 schedules sets down the systems, powers, obligations, key privileges, and order standards of the Government of India and its residents. It was not an easy achievement. After countless sacrifices and suffering, British Raj ended on August 14 August 1947. After that, Indians followed a modified version of the Government of India Act 1935- a British established act.

A couple of weeks afterward, a drafting committee came into being.

Their sole purpose was to form the Indian Constitution. The draft of the Indian Constitution was presented before the Indian Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1947. Throughout two years and a span of 166 days, the 308 individuals from the Assembly met in meetings that were made open to the general society and made alterations to the drafts.

At last, on January 24 January 1950, the Assembly individuals marked two manually written versions of the Indian Constitution, one in English language and one in Hindi. And then, on January 26 January 1950, history was made. The day marked the beginning of Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s initial term as President of the Indian Union. The Constituent Assembly turned into the Parliament of India.

India Republic Day celebrations in the country are magnificent!

In Delhi, at Rajpath, the Republic Day Parade is held. There are brilliant motorcades by regiments of the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, police, and paramilitary powers walk. Wonderful scenes addressing the magnificence of all the states of India are additionally displayed during the motorcade. The Air Force puts on a whole show in the sky.

The most magnificent is the Indian Defence parade. It is a presentation of India's might and prowess. The parade is highlighted with a display of the most recently acquired rockets, airplanes, and weapon frameworks. The Prime Minister of India also pays his respects to the fearless people who lost their lives in the wars. He also lays a wreath at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate in Delhi to recognize the martyred troopers.

Schools all across India have their own parades with the National Cadet Corps. Flag hoisting and skits depicting war scenes remind us of our Amar Jawans and their innumerable sacrifices.

Republic Day 2022 will also witness bravery awards like the Paramvir Chakra, Kirti Chakra Vir Chakra, National Bravery Award, and the Ashok Chakra being presented to deserving candidates. The Republic Day Parade is one of the most breathtaking parades ever. People visit Delhi from different corners of the world to partake in these celebrations.
