Tell us a bit about yourself and your family?
I am Saumya Singh, founder of make And Learn. Make And Learn is a company that manufactures STEAM-based Science DIY activity Kits for children aged between 5 to 15yrs. I am a passionate educationist. I have done B—Tech in Computer Science and MBA in Finance. I am a wife and mother of a son aged 15yrs. I pride myself on getting consistent support from all my family members.
Have you had any formal training or family business?
Yes, I am an MBA graduate. I also have a hands-on experience in a family-run manufacturing business.
What inspired you to take this challenge and organize an industry/product that’s highly unorganized in the Indian market?
I constantly desired to have my own Business separate from my family-run Business as I thought it would help me explore all my potential right from inception. Coming from an Engineering background, I realized Science education was not structured around practical applications of different science concepts. It was more of rote learning and lacked experiential learning. The type of products available and sold in the market in the name of experiential learning was not touching the core of experiential learning. The absence of significant and organized companies in this sector inspired me to start my venture.
What has been your proudest moment?
My proudest moment is when I see a glimpse of appreciation, joy, and wonder in a child’s eye when they understand the science concepts through our models.
What are some of the biggest challenges you faced as an entrepreneur?
The biggest challenge I faced was, finding the correct people who can conceptualize the models so that Science becomes fun, easy, and practical.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting?
I want to advise the person to be consistent in efforts and patient towards positive results.
Given a chance, would you alter any of your life decisions?
Yes, given a chance, I would have preferred a Pure Science degree instead of an Engineering degree as it would have helped me design the models in a more wholesome way. Nonetheless, the Engineering degree did help me in giving me exposure to various manufacturing skills that I use in making my products.
