Top 3 mistakes we make on our zero-waste journey and how to avoid them!

Yes it's absolutely essential and about time we all start thinking about getting on our zero waste journey!

But it's not as easy as it sounds. You do and will  come across a few obstacles and below are the 3 most common mistakes we land up making on our zero-waste journey.  But let's also see how we can avoid them!

#1- Doing too much too soon

Going zero waste is a journey, so it is not something that you can do all at once! You are bound to struggle when you try to go from 100 to 0 straight away, and this can lead to getting overwhelmed and ultimately giving up.

To avoid this, try and gradually reduce your single-use plastic consumption. Gradually is the key here. A great way to begin is to go right to the kitchen!

- Look at food and produce where you could reduce your plastic quickly.

- Replace single-use plastic bags with  Reusable Bags. This could be done one item at a time.

#2- Replacing everything all at once

Zero-waste does not happen overnight, I can not stress this enough! We have to be budget conscious as well as environmentally savvy. Please do not throw all your plastics out today and replace everything with environmentally friendly alternatives. Instead, replace things as you need them.

This will not only help your wallet but avoid what you already have from going to waste. We don't need more waste, we all need less waste.

#3- Don’t throw things away! Recycle!

Your goal is zero waste, so don’t start throwing away old items aimlessly! One of the best ways to zero waste is to use the things you have to it utmost capacity.

If you can't use it any further, find a recycling depot, a donation bin, somewhere or someone who can reuse items you would otherwise dispose of.

Consider handing them down to friends and family, who could give these items a second life. And be open to taking second hand things from others.

Compost food waste and other items that you can. This can also help to grow your garden and keep your plants healthy and happy!

Be mindful that it can take unto a year or two to go completely zero-waste, so do not get discouraged when it does not happen right away!  What’s important is that you have taken the first step and are working towards this very important goal for yourself.
