What Does It Mean To Be An Empowered Woman?

There have been many empowering women throughout history who have graced our world with their existence, just to name a few:

  • Cleopatra VII (69 BC - 30 BC): Cleopatra was the last Pharaoh of ancient Egypt and was known for her intelligence, political savvy, and leadership skills. She was a strong ruler and made significant contributions to the arts, sciences, and trade in her kingdom.

  • Boudicca (early 1st century): Boudicca was a queen of the Iceni tribe of modern-day England during the Roman occupation in the 1st century AD. She is famous for leading a major rebellion against the

  • Roman Empire in 60 AD, in response to the mistreatment of her people and violations of their rights.

  • Joan of Arc (1412 - 1431): Joan of Arc was a French military leader who inspired the French to victory during the Hundred Years' War. She is celebrated for her courage, leadership, and unwavering belief in her mission.

  • Jane Austen (1775 - 1817): Jane Austen established the English novel as a medium for entertainment, amusement, and social comment. Her stories about the lives of middle-class people in rural England, untouched by the political unrest and wars redefining Europe at the time, are still widely read and discussed today.

  • Simone de Beauvoir (1908 - 1986): Simone de Beauvoir was one of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century. Her famous book, The Second Sex, in which she analysed the systematic devaluation of women throughout history, scandalized post-war Europe.

These are all women from the past, some really old and some of them from the quite recent past. They cannot be compared to each other to distinguish what it means to be an “empowered” woman as they all lived in different times and different societies, but to take the simple meaning of the word really is that: Being an empowered woman means taking control of one's life and actively working towards personal and professional growth and success. It means embracing and celebrating one's unique qualities, abilities, and strengths, while also recognizing areas for improvement and taking steps to address them.

Modern day empowered women are women who have taken control of their lives and are making their own choices, pursuing their own goals and aspirations, and taking an active role in shaping their own future. This can manifest in a variety of ways, including education, career advancement, financial independence, leadership positions, and more. Empowered women are confident, self-assured, and assertive, and they use their strength, influence, and influence to create positive change and make a difference in the world.

The modern day empowered woman can be the youngest Prime Minister of a country (Sanna Marin of the Social Democratic Party. Marin was sworn in on 10 December 2019 and at 34, she became the world's youngest serving state leader and the youngest prime minister in Finland's history).

Or she can be a young Mother starting a family, the possibilities are endless.

There has never been such an endless amount of choices and possibilities for women in the history of our world, and there are many who are taking advantage of this fact and utilising it to it’s fullest capacity.

Here are some examples of modern-day empowered women:

  1. Malala Yousafzai - the youngest Nobel Prize laureate, known for her activism for education and women's rights.
  2. Kamala Harris - the first female, first Black, and first South Asian Vice President of the United States.
  3. Greta Thunberg - a Swedish environmental activist known for her campaigns to address the climate crisis.
  4. Sheryl Sandberg - the COO of Facebook and author of "Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead."
  5. Emma Watson - an actress and UN Women Goodwill Ambassador known for her activism on gender equality and women's rights.
  6. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - the youngest woman ever elected to the US Congress, known for her progressive policies and advocacy.
  7. Oprah Winfrey - a media mogul, philanthropist, and influential leader in the entertainment industry and beyond.

These are just a few examples of modern-day empowered women who are making a significant impact in their respective fields and beyond.

Empowerment involves having confidence in one's decisions, being assertive and speaking up for oneself, and having the courage to pursue one's goals and dreams.

It also involves having a positive self-image and treating oneself with respect and kindness.

Being an empowered woman is not just about personal growth and success, but also about making a positive impact on the world. It is about leading by example and inspiring others to become the best versions of themselves.

It is important to note that the journey to empowerment is ongoing and can involve challenges and setbacks. However, with self-reflection, determination, and a growth mindset, any woman can become empowered and make a difference in her own life and in the lives of those around her.

Being empowered doesn’t have to mean being well known and revered, it means to apply all of your intelligence in all aspects of your life regardless of the task ahead of you, be it a work presentation or cleaning your house. It’s in the small things which true empowerment emerges from.
