How to be Prepare for natural disasters like earthquake/tsunami

Natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis can happen at any time and being prepared can make all the difference in ensuring the safety and well-being of yourself and your loved ones.

In this blog, we will discuss some essential steps you can take to prepare for an earthquake or tsunami. By following these guidelines, you can take proactive measures to safeguard your family, your property, and your peace of mind in the event of a natural disaster.

Here are some tips that can help you be better prepared for any emergency:

  • Personal Preparedness: Stock up on essential supplies and medicines, and keep them easily accessible. Prepare an emergency kit for your kids, and keep another one near the exit door of your house. Identify hiding places inside your house where you and your family can take shelter during an emergency.

  • Family Preparedness: Create a communication plan with your family members, and decide on a meet-up point in case you get separated. Keep a list of important numbers handy, and make sure your kids have a small diary with emergency contact information.

  • Community Preparedness: Familiarize yourself with the nearest park or open area that can serve as an assembly point in case of an emergency. If you live in a condo or work in a high-rise building, make sure you know the location of the nearest exit doors.

  • Disaster-proof Your House: Rearrange furniture and decorations away from the bed to avoid any accidents during an earthquake. Use shock-absorbing supplies where possible to prevent damage to your belongings.

Natural disasters can strike at any time and can cause significant damage to life, property, and infrastructure. Earthquakes and tsunamis are two such disasters that can cause widespread destruction and loss of life. However, with the right preparation and planning, it is possible to minimize the impact of these disasters.

Earthquake Preparedness:

  1. Create an Emergency Plan: The first step in preparing for an earthquake is to create an emergency plan for your family. Discuss with your family members about what to do during an earthquake and where to meet if you get separated.
  2. Conduct a Home Safety Inspection: Conduct a safety inspection of your home to identify any potential hazards during an earthquake. Secure heavy objects like bookshelves, cabinets, and water heaters to prevent them from falling.
  3. Build an Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency kit with essential items like food, water, medicine, first aid kit, flashlight, and batteries.
  4. Learn First Aid: Learn basic first aid techniques to help yourself and others in the event of an earthquake.
  5. Practice Earthquake Drills: Practice earthquake drills with your family members to ensure everyone knows what to do during an earthquake.

READ about earthquake best practices.

Tsunami Preparedness:

  1. Identify High-Risk Areas: Know if you live in a high-risk area for tsunamis. Check with your local authorities and stay informed about the latest news and warnings.
  2. Create an Emergency Plan: Create an emergency plan for your family and discuss what to do in case of a tsunami. Identify safe evacuation routes and safe meeting places.
  3. Build an Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency kit with essential items like food, water, medicine, first aid kit, flashlight, and batteries.
  4. Learn about Tsunami Warnings: Learn about the different types of tsunami warnings and how to recognize them. Take immediate action when you receive a warning.
  5. Practice Tsunami Drills: Practice tsunami drills with your family members to ensure everyone knows what to do during a tsunami.

By following these simple tips, you can be better prepared for any disaster that may come your way. Remember, it's never too late to start preparing for an emergency. Start today, and stay safe!
